A Family Foundation offers much of the benefits of a private foundation
without many of the costs or restrictions. The Jewish Community Foundation
establishes a separate public charity in your family's name (for example,
"Davidson Family Foundation"). The Jewish Community Foundation handles all
administrative responsibilities and furnishes you with a record of all
transactions. Your gifts are eligible for the maximum tax deduction allowed
for gifts to a public charity.
The Family Foundation is governed by a Board of Directors, part of which is
selected by you. This is an excellent way to involve family members in the
Family Foundation. Other community members are selected as Board members by
the Jewish Community Foundation. The Family Foundation Board meets at least
once a year to award grants of their choice to the community. As a "supporting
organization" of a public charity such as the Jewish Community Foundation, the
Family Foundation becomes a public charity itself. A key purpose of the Family
Foundation is to reinforce the charitable objectives of its "parent" public
charity-the Jewish Community Foundation, which encourages philanthropy in many
forms and will serve as a resource to assist you and your family in your
grant-making.
While the Jewish Community Foundation supports all worthwhile charitable causes, both
Jewish and general, to continue the traditions of Jewish philanthropy, a Family
Foundation must award 25% of its annual grants to Jewish organizations.
Since the Jewish Community Foundation oversees the administrative details,
your family is free to focus on the real joys of a Family Foundation: Working
together on tzedakah, helping others and improving the world.
